Environmental Science Students Collect Information for the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area

NNMC Environmental Science students who completed ES 401 Community Participation and Planning, learned about public input as required by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA)through hands on community organizing and public meetings.

"Public participation is required under NEPA which is part of the Management Plan required for all Heritage Areas," stated Dr. Camilla Bustamante, one of the instructors of the course. The course was team taught with Jose L. Villa, retired professor from San Jose State University and former community organizer (also the interim Director of the NRGNHA).

Public Law 109-338 was passed by US Congress in October of 2006 to recognize the unique place and its people. The mission of the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area is to respect, protect, and conserve, yet celebrate the landscape and the historical, social, and cultural characteristics of the multicultural communities of Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Taos counties.

¡Sostenga! Hosts ZERI Founder and Eco-Economist, Gunter Pauli on October 15th

On October 15, 2007 a small group of students, educators, farmers and ZERI Project leaders participated in a one day workshop with Gunter Pauli, founder of the Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives (ZERI).
"This [presentation] was so enlightening. The philosophy that nothing is impossible makes it all possible, 'it will just take a little longer.' He focuses on what we can do. He was the most inspirational speaker I have heard in this decade," said environmental consultant Daniel Valerio.

"Systems thinking is an important part of ongoing assurance of sustainability," said Dr. Camilla Bustamante, "Using and developing our multiple intelligences is critical in supporting the traditions of culture, safety, security and meeting the needs of the Upper Rio Grande Valley. "¡Sostenga! is about developing our community, and ZERI philosophy supports this."

The discussion included a public presentation of the Picuris Sustainable Forestry Project
Luther Martinez, Picuris Project Leader, explained the objectives and activities of the initiative.

Ongoing ZERI presentations will be announced through the¡Sostenga! website.
